چکیده

There is growing interest in many sectors in developing highly autonomous systems such as Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) with significant in-mission executive power. Such systems have the potential to replace humans in a variety of dangerous tasks, but there is concern that the combination of novel technologies with demanding tasks and unpredictable environments will lead to new safety challenges. This paper reviews proposed scenarios of autonomous system applications and identifies the safety concerns that they raise. It then explores how autonomous systems can be certified as safe to operate within the terms of the existing safety standards that are used by the UK military. The combination of difficulties arising from the nature of autonomous systems and the provisions of the existing safety standards raise serious concerns about the practicality of certification. With this in mind, promising work on new techniques for analysing and ensuring the safety of autonomous systems is reviewed. Finally, some future concerns and directions are identified.

Certification of Autonomous Systems

Many proposed autonomous systems are safety critical and will have to be certified before they can be operated. This paper reviews the challenges that autonomous systems pose for safety and the current state of relevant safety standards, concluding that autonomous system certification is possible under current regimes, but difficult given current safety analysis techniques. Some promising techn...

Certification for Autonomous Vehicles

The landscape of certification in the auto industry reflects the necessity to keep consumers safe. Currently, certification of new vehicles depends on an ability to pass rigorous testing of components for durability and reliability in case of a crash. There currently exist no definitive standards that dictate best practices for software found in vehicles and responses to autonomous technology i...

Integration of Quality, Health and Safety and Environment Management Systems in Contractor Organisations

Organisations of all types are increasingly implementing management systems for quality, health and safety and environment for many reasons including the fulfilment of legal obligations, a better image for stakeholders and the wider demonstration of concern for society. In the majority of cases, these management systems are being developed around the certification and accreditation requirements...

Guaranteeing functional safety: design for provability and computer-aided verification

When autonomous robots begin to share the human living and working spaces, safety becomes paramount. It is legally required that the safety of such systems is ensured, e. g. by certification according to relevant standards such as IEC 61508. However, such safety considerations are usually not addressed in academic robotics. In this paper we report on one such successful endeavour, which is conc...

A safety concept for a wind power mixed-criticality embedded system based on multicore partitioning

The development of mixed-criticality systems that integrate applications of different criticality levels (safety, security, real-time and non real-time) can provide multiple benefits such as product cost-size-weight reduction, reliability increase and scalability. However, the integration of applications of different levels of criticality leads to several challenges with respect to safety certi...
